Navaratri

From Sahaja Yoga Encyclopedia

There are four Navarātri (Nava –‘nine’, rātri –‘nights’) festivals in the year, at the changes of the seasons. Sharadiya –‘Autumn’ is the most important and most widely celebrated. Vasantha –‘Spring’ Navarātri is also popular (at the start of the month Chaitra around the beginning of April). Navarātri begins on the first day of the month Ashvin, which is the New Moon day with the Sun in 1Kanyā –‘Virgo’, the Sign of the Goddess. Thus it starts around the beginning of October, between 218th Sept - 17th Oct. Sometimes two 3kalā’s –‘digits’ of the moon do not occur on consecutive days and the ‘nine nights’ take ten days (as this year). It is also possible, though less common for the nine nights to occur within eight days (as in 2013). The tenth day is called Dusshera or Vijaya-daśhami –‘Tenth Day of Victory’ and is a day of 4great rejoicing where Shri Rāma’s victory over the demon Rāvana and His subsequent coronation are celebrated.
